From the day of their birth Jamecia and Jacoiya Brown have held a basketball in their hand.
The two sisters, have been playing basketball since they learned how to dribble a ball down the court – five years old to be exact.
“Basketball just runs in the family,” Jacoiya, a junior, said. “It’s just one of those things we always knew we would do.”
Jamecia and Jacoiya aren’t just sisters that share a love of basketball; they also play on the same Denton High School varsity basketball team. This isn’t the first time they’ve shared the same coach for six years these athletes have been on the same team.
Jamecia, a senior, being the oldest out of the two girls loves having her sister on the same team so she can help her succeed.
“I like that I get to help and see her improve in basketball,” Jamecia said. “But sometimes it’s not so good, because siblings often do things to annoy you. She makes me mad when she gets tired and doesn’t want to run it makes us run more.”
The two have been a big part of Lady Bronco rebuilding effort under head coach Dennis Krishka.
“They [Jamecia and Jacoiya] have given us size and strength inside that we had been missing for awhile,” Krishka said. “Both have made tremendous strides during their time in the program.”
Jamecia, who averages 13.5 points and 7.7 rebounds per game, has progressed from a junior varsity player her 9th grade year to a starter her sophomore year. Her junior year she took it up a notch and became an All-District Player.
Jacoiya, according to Krishka, played very little in junior high causing her development to take a little longer. That hasn’t stopped her from working her way into being a part time starter and key contributor.
The sisters helped the Broncos to their biggest win in five years when they beat rival Ryan 48-44 on Jan. 9.
“My fondest memory so far was how they dominated the inside in our victory over Ryan earlier this year,” Krishka said. “Jamecia had 16 points and 12 rebounds while Jacoiya had 11 points and 6 rebounds.”
Unfortunately for the sisters, when the season concludes so will their time playing together. Jamecia has no desire to play basketball in college although she gets offers; she feels that her dream is something bigger. Her end goal is to become an accountant.
“It’s great playing with my sister,” Jacoiya said. “We just click. It’s sad it’s all going to end.”
