Looking for some team bonding experience, Denton head baseball coach Glen Harrison turned to one of his former players.
This wasn’t any ordinary player; it was LA Angels’ outfielder Vernon Wells.
Wells, who established the Perfect 10 Charity facility in Denton, to help expecting or single mothers by giving them a place to stay and helping them start off on the right foot once they leave the program.
The baseball team participated in Wells charity the beginning of January, cleaning a two house, 2.2 acre lot. Part of the job consisted of raking leaves and doing anything else they could to chip in.
“I hope the boys get something out of this,” Harrison, said. “I hope they see how fortunate they are and what it means to give back others less fortunate.”
Harrison, who coached Wells at Arlington Bowie, in the mid 1990’s found out about the program and this his players could benefit from it.
“The biggest thing I learned from this experience is to not take anything for granted and know that there are people out there less fortunate than you,” sophomore Bowie Farris said amongst the day he spent with the Wells’ charity. “It was definitely cool to meet someone from TV, especially when you’re able to shake their hand in real life.”
Through all his success, Vernon has remained as humble and classy as he was growing up in Arlington.
“I hope many of the players look up to Vernon now and want to be like him one day,” Harrison said. “I was glad that the team got to meet him and I hope they see who Vernon really is rather than just at a baseball aspect.”
