Academics Makes it to Regionals

The Academic University Interscholastic League Regional Meet took place at Lubbock on Apr. 14. Spelling & Vocabulary earned 2nd place and senior T.J. Akram placed 6th in individual honors. The Computer Science team finished in 2nd with junior Brendon Bown getting 3rd in individual honors, later earning 11th place at State in Computer Science. Finally, junior Adriana Poe placed 6th in Feature Writing for Journalism.

In preparation for the events, students often memorize terms to better understand them.

“UIL’s good, because it encourages like minded students to compete against each other,” Akram said. “I’m nervous because kids from other schools are smart, but I’ll do my best.”

English, History, and ESOL teacher Seth Ross is head of the Spelling and Vocabulary event, and was head of the trip to Regionals.

“The best thing about UIL is my students,” Ross said. “They’re driven, I don’t need to get on to them about studying or preparing for contests. They really get after it.”
