DHS dribbles past Byron Nelson

In Trophy Club Tuesday the Broncos fell 67-51 to the Byron Nelson Bobcats, finishing their district season 11-3 and in third place in District 5-4A.

Denton’s leading scorer on the night was senior guard Michael Jackson, who was 5-15 with 19 points, 1 assist, 4 rebounds, and a steal. Byron Nelson’s leading scorer, senior guard Keyunta Watkins, was 6-20 with 23 points, 1 assist, 3 rebounds, 2 steals, and a perfect 9-9 night at the free throw line.

The Broncos led 35-33 at the half, but only scored 4 points to Byron Nelson’s 17 in the fourth quarter.

“I thought we did a good job,” Denton head coach Harold Jackson said. “I just think we weren’t able to get the ball in the bucket. We missed a lot of chip shots that we usually make, then we started to press and force things, and it just kind of snowballed from there.”

The Broncos were 11-12 shooting free throws. By comparison, the Bobcats went 23-24, including going 7-8 in the second half.

“They were more aggressive in the second half,” Jackson said. “They got to the free throw line, and the team that’s more aggressive and gets to the free throw line is usually the team that comes out successful.”

Tuesday the Broncos will play the Boswell Pioneers, who finished as the second place team in District 6-4A, at Timber Creek High School in Fort Worth at 6 p.m.
