Broncos can’t stop the run, fall to Friars 30-14

Friday night at Bronco Field, the Broncos couldn’t open the new era of Denton High football the way the wanted to, losing 30-14 to the Bishop Lynch Friars.

Early in the game, the Broncos took an early 7-0 lead with a 66-yard interception return for a touchdown by senior Dantrell Forte. However, the Friars would score 30 unanswered points, including one off of a blocked punt. Bishop Lynch running back Rawleigh Williams led both teams in rushing with 155 yards on 22 carries.

“We probably got a little tired,” head coach Kevin Atkinson said. “They had a really good back; that back is a sophomore and he’s already been offered [scholarships] by Ole Miss and other Division I schools. So, he’s really talented, and we didn’t keep the defense off the field. We’ve got to control the clock a little bit more.”

While the Broncos totaled for less than zero yards rushing, junior quarterback Cy Ward managed to throw for 184 yards, going 20-29 with one interception and a late 21-yard touchdown pass to junior Deandre Coleman. The score punctuated an 80-yard drive in the dying moments of the 4th Quarter.

“That was a beautiful work of art,” Atkinson said. “I’m glad we finished the way we finished. We finished strong, we didn’t lose our composure.”

On Thursday the Broncos look forward to bouncing back from the defeat, when they travel to Carrollton to face the R.L. Turner Lions.

“We talked to them [the players] about being mentally tough,” Atkinson said. “We need to get better at that. There were some kind of sad faces, and we’ve just got to put some good things together on back-to-back-to-back plays…. It’s a learning experience for us, as a staff, of what our kids can and cannot do, and we just need to build on that.”
