Having just missed out on a shot to reach the All State Band as a junior, saxophonist Kevin Ford was going to make sure that opportunity didn’t pass him up as a senior.
Last year, Ford placed fourth in his group, but only one person from each group qualifies for the state band.
This year he worked extremely hard, and on Jan. 7, Ford saw his dream come true as he is advancing to the TMEA Convention in San Antonio. Of all the students to try out in the Denton ISD, he was the only one to make the cut for the February convention.
“The audition was a lot of fun,” Ford said. “I have really enjoyed being in band and I am going miss it when it all does come to an end.”
He received four out of the five first place votes to beat out the other competitors in his room.
The two other students who competed from DHS: sophomore Omar Rivera placed 11th on the clarinet, and freshman Abby Harris placed sixth on the flute.
“We had a very good showing this year,” Brian Wilson, director of the bands said. “We were the only school in the district to make state.”
