Four qualify for all-state choir

On the first weekend in January, eight Broncos competed for a spot on the All State Choir. Four of those eight qualified for the choir that will be performing in San Antonio the second week of February.

The four who reached the next round were juniors, Josh Harden, Javan Stalls, Nicole Thompson and senior Nathan Schafer.

“I felt pretty good going in,” Nicole Thompson said. “I was a little nervous about the audition, but when they called my name I jumped for joy. I was really excited making it for a second year.”’

Thompson wasn’t the only one nervous heading into the competition.

“My voice sucked that morning,” Javan Stalls said. “But I wouldn’t trade the experience for anything, it was fantastic.”

Schafer who made all state for the second straight year felt a little more comfortable than the rest with the tryout experience.

“I felt it was a walk in the park,” Schafer said. “I made it last year so I knew what to expect.”

The competition to reach the last of the four rounds started in September. That is when choir directors Mark Baker and Patti Freeman started working with the students.

“We did very well this year,” Freeman said. “The competition is really stiff, even if you have what it takes. We were very proud of all the students.”
