Megan Gabriel was named the math teacher of the year nominee for Denton High.
Megan Gabriel is a high school math teacher, a university instructor, a mom, a wife, and a 2013-2014 teacher of the year nominee.
“It’s feels awesome to be nominated for teacher of the year,” Gabriel said. “I feel very special and appreciated.”
Born and raised in Denton, Texas Gabriel, you could say has never been too far away from the place she grew up.
“I went to Stephen F. Austin University for a few years, and then I came back to Denton where I’m originally from,” Gabriel said. “I’m a Ryan High Raider graduate, but I’m a traitor to them because, now I’m a Denton High Bronco.”
Gabriel taught in the Northwest ISD at Byron Nelson High School before returning to Denton to teach at Navo Middle School, and eventually Denton High.
“This is my 7th year teaching, but I’ve been teaching in at Denton High for four years,” Gabriel said. “I teach a Freshman level Math class, and a Senior level math class at Texas Woman’s University.”
While most teachers only teach one class, you could say that Gabriel teaches almost every math class known to man.
“I teach 8th Grade Geometry, I teach Pre-AP geometry. Pre-AP and Dual Credit Pre-Cal,” Gabriel said. “Oh and I’m a wife too, so I do that as well.”
Gabriel doesn’t have much time to do anything that she really likes, which is literally nothing.
“Honestly if I finish what I have to do, I like to do nothing,” Gabriel said. “I like to sit in peace and quiet, which I rarely get to do. That’s if I have everything graded, my child is asleep, and my lessons are done.”
A lot of teachers don’t like to interact with their students and tend to be a little bit anti-social, but that isn’t the case when it comes to Gabriel.
“The best part about my job is my students,” Gabriel said. “I get to interact with my students and I enjoy it. And I get to share my passion and love about mathematics to my students, too. I’m also a nerd, so I put a little nerdiness in them as well.”
