When the clock hit midnight on the night of December 31, 2011, thousands of new laws went into effect in the United States. Other than the law that’s on hold (which states voters must have a government-issue ID with them at the polls), 20 new Texas laws took effect. None should affect teenagers, but here are some from the rest of the 49 states that do, as well as some other interesting ones:
- California: kids 12+ can now get an HPV vaccine without parental consent
- California: kids up to 8 years old must now sit in booster seats
- California: you must now be 18 to use a tanning bed
- Florida: all minors must now have parental permission to get tattoos
- Illinois: motorcyclists (which the traffic cameras cannot detect) can now legally cross an intersection during a red light, if they’ve waited long enough
- Illinois: stricter regulations on acid sales
- Louisiana: teens in driver’s education courses must learn rules about littering
- New Hampshire: teens getting abortions must have their parents notified about it
- New York: teens aren’t allowed in hookah bars
- New York: it is now illegal to own/sell bear gallbladders
- North Dakota: drivers under 16 must hold their permit for a year before moving onto a full license
- Pennsylvania: drivers must make sure no one under 18 is riding without a seatbelt in their car
- Utah: daily drink deals are now banned (including non-alcoholic happy hour specials)
