Water Polo finishes fifth in state

Ben Naugle fires away at the net during the teams state meet over the weekend. Naugle earned honorable mention all state.

Over the weekend the boy’s water polo team finished with their best season in school history by knocking off Houston Clear Springs to claim fifth place in the state of Texas.

The team after knocking off Houston Cy Creek 11-4 in the opener suffered a small set back in a 10-7 loss to Houston Clear Lake. They rebounded to end the tournament in fine fashion with a 24-4 victory to earn their final finish.

In the opener Thuomas Hyvarinen had five goals and two steals, while Michael Adami added three gaols and six steals. Ben Naugle chipped in two goals and Brad Broussard one. Gus Cocchiarella blocked 13 shots in the contest.

In their only loss of the tournament Hyvarinen scored four goals and picked up five steals. Adami, Naugle and Dickens all scored once and Cocchiarella blocked 10 shots on net.

In their last match of the season Hyvarinen once again led the way with 11 goals and six steals. Adami contributed five goals, three assists and seven steals, while Naugle had three goals two assists and five steals. Rowell and Andrew Thompson had two goals apiece, while Alexander Barker added one. Cocchiarella stopped 14 shots.

For their efforts Hyvarinen earned first team all-state, and Adami second team all-state. Naugle and Cocchiarella received honorable mention.
