Amaya leading boys into sectional round

Last year, the boys’ soccer team went to playoffs, but it didn’t go as well as they wanted it to. With an early exit last year, the Broncos are back in the playoffs, and have their eyes set on a state championship.

Senior Feliciano Amaya has taken full charge so far in the playoffs; because he feels he has to make up for last year.

“I messed up my chances last year,” Amaya said. “I had a lot of chances to score, but I didn’t which is one of the main reasons we lost.”

Head coach Scott Heffley appoints Amaya’s determination to redeem himself this year simply because he knows what he can do.

“He’s one of those players who put a lot of pressure on himself because he has the ability and the capability to be great,” Heffley said. “He’s extra motivated this year, and has come up big in our playoff games, and gave us that extra push that we needed.”

Amaya has scored three goals in the Broncos first two playoff games, and feels that the weight is off his shoulders. Senior Diego Gonzalez has seen the improvements in Amaya’s game, and claims it’s by far the best improvement on the team.

“His improvement is substantial,” Gonzalez said.  “He is the most improved player I’ve seen in my four years playing here at DHS, and he is the hardest worker on and off the field.”

Amaya has played soccer since he was four years old, and has taken the sport very seriously since his early years. Now that he could be playing in his last game at any time, he only has one thing on his mind, and that is to get a win in every playoff game they play.

“In playoffs it really doesn’t matter who we play because we plan to beat whoever we are matched up against,” Amaya said. “Every day we work hard to our fullest potential.  It’s never ending training.”
