Rallying from 13 points down in the fourth quarter it looked like Denton was going to make in improbable comeback and snag win number one of the 2010 football season.
Having struggled during the past five years, winning just seven games, the Broncos had win number one of the 2010 snatched out of their hands. Woodrow Wilson marched down the field aided by a penalty and delivered the knockout blow with just two seconds left to escape with a 35-28 season opening victory.
The winning score came on a nine yard pass into the back of the end zone which wiped out DHS comeback. The Broncos had just taken the lead with just 1:47 left in the game when quarterback Dentton Hudspeth connected with Matthew Perry from nine yards out. That was the team’s second score within a 4:01 span as Denzell King brought DHS within six on a two yard run.
“Our kids never quit and battled back,” head coach Randy Patzkowski said. “I couldn’t be any prouder of them, but we have to find a way to make a play there at the end. We can’t afford to let plays like that happen.”
The one area that stood out was the Bronco defense. Having struggled for most of last season, they held the Wildcats in check. They allowed Woodrow Wilson just 89 yards in the first half, and 291 in the game.
The final score indicates that the defense gave up 35 points, but in reality that wasn’t the case. One score came on a fumble and two others were set up by DHS miscues.
“I thought our defense played really well,” Patzkowski said. “We put them in a hole early and you can’t do that and expect to keep coming back. We’ve just got to use this as a character building lesson and come out there and get a win next week.”
Denton entered the opener not expecting to throw the ball much, but Hudspeth completed nine passes for 146 yards and two scores. His favorite target was Perry, who he teamed up with three times for 58 yards on the go ahead score late in the fourth.
The offense which gained over 300 yards offense was led on the ground by Darren Smith who finished with six carries for 95 yards and a 76 yard touchdown.
