It’s always been a dream for Erin Taylor to be a head coach. Starting next year, she will have this opportunity as the former Ryan High assistant basketball coach was named head basketball coach at Denton High this week.
Although this will be Coach Taylor’s first time placed at a head coaching position, she is more than ready to help lead the women’s basketball program at DHS back to the next level. Taylor will be replacing former Head Coach Dennis Krishka who will be retiring at the end of this school year after eight seasons as the head coach.
“I plan on bringing passion and excitement into the game,” Taylor said. “To do this, I’m going to get the girls excited to play. The amount of energy will bring a fast tempo style of game play. Ultimately, our goal is to win state championship, but right now, winning district is the vision. With hard work and effort, we can surely do it.”
Taylor is glad to have the chance to coach at DHS and stay in Denton ISD where she’s been for the last eight years.
“I’ve lived in Denton ever since the age of six,” Taylor said. “Denton is where I feel most comfortable. I’ve grown up in this city and built a home here with my friends and family. I’ve been coaching women’s basketball ever since I started at Ryan, but I never had a head coaching position.”
Taylor is still teaching at Ryan for the rest of the school year, but starting next fall, she will be at DHS the full day instead of splitting her time between the two campuses.
“I’m happy that I can be here the whole day and not have to make extra trips between schools,” Taylor said. “This allows me to focus more on practice. During the course of coaching, I want to incorporate my philosophy. I believe it’s important to be honest, love your players and love your sport. While keeping these positive characteristics, I want us to work hard. And when we continue the effort, not only will the girls be good athletes, but also great, young women.”
