The 2013 Freshman Volleyball season has gone exceedingly well as the team closes its season next week. The team is currently 11-1 in district 5-4A play after last night’s victory at Lake Dallas.

“Our freshmen are doing awesome,” Coach Mary Wendell said. “We are 11-1 in district. I’m not sure of our overall record but I know it’s been amazing. They are a great group of kids.”

The freshman girls have gelled together, but their strongest attribute isn’t something that can be measured by a scoreboard.

“Our attitude,” Wendell said. “We have an amazing attitude. They really want to get out there and win. They love the game, and we can’t ask for anything more than that.”

When it comes to the star players, the squad has none.

“I think they all are key players,” Wendell said. “They all have a role that they have to fill. I mean we have kids, who are “finishers”, but we have other kids who are our cheerleaders; some kids are our leaders. We have kids that fill each role and they are all important for our team. So we don’t really have anyone that stands out.”.”

The girls really exercised their strengths while beating Guyer, their best game according to their coach.

“My girls have a little bit of a rivalry, from middle school, with Harpool,” Wendell said.  “Most of those Harpool kids go to Guyer, while most of my kids are from McMath, and Harpool actually beat them last year for district championship. So the Guyer game was a big game because of that and it was exciting getting to see them win and play so awesome. And we actually play them on Tuesday again so we are excited; it’s our last game of the district season.”
