Volleyball ends successful year in bi-district loss
The volleyball team has become one of Denton’s strongest programs qualifying for the playoffs for the past three seasons.
Unfortunately for the Lady Broncos their season came to a halt last night as they dropped their bi-district match to district 6-4A champion Saginaw Boswell.
Having to battle to the end of the season and qualify as the fourth seed in a three team playoff, the team showed it could play with the best. Boswell which entered the game at 34-4 after being knocked off in the first game 20-25, rallied to win the next three 25-15, 25-22 and 25-15 to advance to face Granbury in the area round.
“The first game, we were on fire,” head coach Danielle Silva said. “That’s the best ball I’ve seen us play. Then, the second, third and fourth games, we couldn’t overcome when something didn’t go our way, and that’s what led to the score. They would get a kill or we would get an up, but we couldn’t overcome the negatives.”
Leading the team’s effort was Jade Akins with 15 kills and 15 digs. Outside hitter Kenzie Dozier had 14 kills and 11 digs, while setter Hannah Altman notched 21 assists and 11 digs.
“We made the playoffs, we were consistent and we played with heart,” Silva said. “I feel like that we definitely accomplished those. No, we didn’t accomplish going further — last year we won bi-district and lost in area — but I feel like next year is going to be our year. We’ve had great teams the last few years, but I’m really excited to see what these kids can do next year.”
