Water polo is, by some measures, the most consistent sport Denton High has.
The team has been to state each of the last two years and is 12-3 so far this year. A few days away from regionals, the squad is confident it will end its season on a high note.
“So far, we have dominated every other team in our region,” junior Josh Rowell said. “We have a good starting team and a goalie like a brick wall. We are definitely going to state.”
The top four teams in each region qualify for state. The Broncos are currently first in the region.
“Other than our two losses to St. Mark’s, we haven’t played a team that has been able to challenge us,” senior goalie and co-captain Gus Cocchiarella said. “We’re in a really good position right now.”
They regularly beat their opponents, including teams they faced at the state competition last year, by double-digits. Two weekends ago, the team traveled to Houston to play in a tournament.
“It was good for us because there were challenging teams there,” Cocchiarella said. “The state champs of the last two years have been Houston teams.”
Regionals for water polo are on April 22nd.
“Water polo has been the best thing to happen to me in high school,” Cocchiarella said. “I’m really going to miss it next year.”
