Oscars have share of twists and turns

Many things were expected of Sunday night’s Oscars, like The Artist taking Best Picture. However, there were also many surprises. Below, both the expected and shocking choices are recapped. (Please note that Billy Crystal’s slightly mean-spirited, but fully hilarious jokes are not included.)

Expected selections:

  • Best Picture – The Artist had been the top pick for months.
  • Best Director – Another win for The Artist. Predictable, even if it wasn’t deserved.
  • The Best Supporting categories – Plummer and Spencer were locks. No shock, no drama.

Surprising selections:

  • Best Actor – The Artist had a very successful night. They won Best Actor (Dujardin), Best Director (Hazanavicius), and Best Picture.
  • Best Actress – This one was definitely down to Davis and Streep, but most people in the critical industry believed it would and should be Davis. Streep won Iron Lady’s second award of the night (the other was makeup).
  • Hugo’s technical near-sweep – I didn’t realize the Academy would appreciate Hugo’s technical brilliance as much as it did. This, combined with its love for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, meant Transformers was shutout.

Hugo and The Artist both won five awards. The Iron Lady was the only other film to win a plurality.
