Denton blanked by Ryan

In a non-district game versus crosstown rival Ryan, Friday night Denton fell 3-0.

Ryan junior Fabian Zuniga was responsible for two goals, the first coming from over 30 yards out in just the seventh minute. A second Raider goal came shortly before halftime from senior Marc Orozco. In the seventy-fourth minute, Zuniga again beat junior keeper Christian Rodriguez with a masterfully placed strike to the opposite corner of the net. Rodriguez finished the night with seven saves, facing ten shots on goal.

“There might have been [some] nerves,” head coach Scott Heffley said. “For the most part, I think we’re our own worst enemy. They didn’t really do anything to keep us from playing the way we can play.”

The Broncos only managed to put four of their 18 shots on net. Just one came in the Ryan-dominated first half of play.

“The game came down to, the opportunities that they created, they finished,” Heffley said. “We created some opportunities that we didn’t.”

Denton still has over a week before District 11-4A play begins versus Guyer. The Broncos’ next match is on the road at Wichita Falls, a team coming off of 6-0 and 4-0 routs of Monterrey and Frenship.

“There are definitely some things we need to improve upon,” Heffley said. “I think we’ve got some great midfielders, but understanding how to move the in coordination with the movements of other players is something that we’re going to spend a lot of time on. Cleaning up in the defense, the few minor errors and mental mistakes we’re making still, I think will help us. But I think overall the most glaring thing that we have to address before the district season starts is finding a player that can consistently on the other team’s goal.”
