At the varsity football games, there is always a reminder on the screen to wear your mask at all times. However, walking through the stands, many people do not cover their noses, or simply aren’t wearing masks at all, while in close proximity to others.
This is unsafe and the policy should be more strictly enforced.
Masks are intended to prevent the spread of disease. As there is still a pandemic, the CDC advises everyone to wear them when around people not in their household, and that is what the government mandates as well. According to a study by UC Davis, masks cut down risk of infection between people by 65%.
People who oppose stricter mask policy say that it should be a personal choice and enforcing masks infringes on their rights.
However, the masks are being worn to protect other people and keep everyone safe. It should not be considered a choice to endanger other people. If they feel that way, there is always the choice to stay at home.
These policies exist for well thought out reasons, created by people in positions of power. We entrust these people with our safety and it is their job to protect everyone. However, that only works if people cooperate.
When buying tickets, watchers should have to agree to follow the COVID policies and wear their masks correctly when they are not eating. If someone isn’t following those rules, they should be barred from buying tickets in the future. This will help keep people who are being unsafe at home and away from everyone else.
